Automatic Road Marking

Road markings are designed for the long run, but sometimes they need to be removed. For instance when a traffic situation changes or a parking lot is redesigned. Special tools plus techniques enable you to remove stripes plus pavement markings efficiently.

Removing existing road striping or pavement markings is a real challenge. The markings must be efficiently removed without causing damage to the road surface. Sometimes the lines are even harder than the underlying asphalt. Moreover the materials used in asphalt are very porous, allowing road paint to penetrate the surface pores.

Road marking removal machine using high pressure water jetting road sign or airfield rubber. Present removal work for road marking has been time-consuming plus labor intensive because it has been performed manually using shaving jenis equipment.

The traditional process cause traffic delay due to the passing control, resulting in unexpected accidents to workers working at dangers road circumstance. Besides, the current shaving method leads to air pollution as well as explosive accidents caused by pro pane gas.

Thus, we have studied to develop the automatic removing equipment which consists of a high pressure water-jet system, automatic control system plus mobile system: the water-jet system consists on an intensifier plus nozzles to give a high pressure plus spray on the marking.

The automatic control system is composed of one axis robot using a hydraulic servo controlled by a lever; plus the mobile system employs a truck which an important role for transport of equipment plus forward movement in a removal process.

Advantages of Road Marking Removal System:

  1. No chemicals, additives or abrasive materials are used
  2. No fumes, smoke or dust is generated
  3. Noise levels are considerably lower than alternative road marking removal techniques
  4. Suitable for use on all types of road surfacing materials
  5. Operates with traffic flow
  6. No personnel required to work on the carriageway
  7. Self contained unit complete with debris vacuum recovery
  8. Minimal surface impact

The Importance of Water Quality

You can’t spell waterjet without
‘water.’ Yet many people ignore
the importance of water quality and
temperature in a well-functioning
waterjet cutting system. Water can
have a tremendous effect on the life of
your waterjet components, including
the pump, seals, nozzles, plus others.
Learn how to save money by controlling water quality plus temperature
to extend the life of your waterjet
parts.
Total Dissolved Solids
The fi rst hurdle in water quality is
to fi lter out impurities before they can
reach the high pressure line or cutting
head. Impurities in water are measured
in parts per million, or ppm, plus consist of dissolved plus suspended solids.
The total dissolved solids (TDS) in
average American tap water ranges
anywhere from 140-400 ppm, with
500 ppm considered unsafe for human
consumption.
The quality of the water supplied
to the intensifi er pump can directly
infl uence the service life of waterjet
components. A high concentration of
TDS causes accelerated wear of any
components that come in contact with
the high pressure water because of the
increased abrasiveness of the water
from the TDS.
Although it would seem logical that
zero parts per million is the desired
quality water for your waterjet, it is
actually counterproductive to remove
all impurities from your water. Pure
water (H2
O) is considered ‘the universal solvent’ plus its presence in your
waterjet can cause major issues including metal pitting plus other damage.
Instead, most waterjet experts recommend aiming for low total dissolved
solids in your water, with 60-70 ppm
of total dissolved solids optimal.

Reverse osmosis (RO) plus deionization (DI) units are available as addons for waterjet owners interested in
regulating their total dissolved solids.
There are many different brands of
RO plus DI systems on the market
and your waterjet manufacturer can
recommend which will work best with
your machine. Many manufacturers
also offer closed-loop systems, like the
WARDJet WRS-3000 water recycler,
which uses the same water over and
over again. Typically, these systems
have built-in water treatment to manage TDS.

Water jet system

NLB’s StarJet is a closed-loop water jet system that removes pavement markings faster and more completely than grinding, without abrasive sarana that might damage concrete or asphalt. Rotating water jets at ultra-high pressure (40,000 psi) are attached robotically to the front of a flatbed truck, which carries a water jet pump unit, water tank and integrated vacuum recovery. All operations are controlled from the cab.

This innovative technology not only improves the efficiency of pavement marking removal but also significantly reduces the environmental impact typically associated with conventional methods. The StarJet system operates silently, minimizing disruption to surrounding areas and contributing to a safer work environment for both workers and motorists. The closed-loop design ensures that the water used during the process is recycled, dramatically decreasing the volume of waste generated. Moreover, the absence of abrasive materials eliminates the risk of secondary environmental damage, such as the spread of debris or pollutants found in traditional grinding methods.

The robotic arm’s precision allows for meticulous removal of markings while protecting the underlying pavement. This careful technique mitigates the risk of accidentally damaging the road surface, prolonging the lifespan of existing infrastructure. As municipalities and agencies increasingly focus on sustainability and efficiency in road maintenance, systems like NLB’s StarJet are becoming invaluable assets. The advanced technology integrates seamlessly with existing roadwork operations, facilitating swift transitions between tasks and reducing downtime. In addition, the system’s adaptability makes it suitable for a variety of surfaces and conditions.

Srv 7 A Runway Washing Star

It’s time for the rubber to meet the road – or in this case – for the rubber to leave the runway. A rubbery runway can lead to reduced friction, a bouncy landing or worse for a plane plus pilot if left unchecked. Luckily, there’s a star on the horizon ready to remove that rubber with up to 40,000 psi blasts of water – NLB Corporation’s StarJet.

“The equipment affords you the ability to remove rubber plus pavement markings without damaging the surface, or scarring the surface. The water will penetrate into the pores of the surface so that you can remove the marking 100 percent,” described Troy Aldea, sales engineer at NLB Corporation. “So, there’s nomor grinding involved. There’s nomor chemicals involved. Sometimes, airports will do rubber removal plus they’ll use a chemical to remove the rubber. With high pressure water, it can be done without chemicals.”

The first StarJet was launched in 1995 when NLB realized there was a market for removing markings without damaging the surfaces those markings were on.

“NLB was using high pressure water from removing coatings plus steel office buildings plus shop floors. It was just a natural progression into the highway industry,” added Aldea.

It was then another “makes sense” transition from highway to runway plus 24 years later in 2019, NLB offers four different models of StarJet – the SRV-1, the SRV-4, SRV-4S, plus SRV-6.

For airports, Aldea said the best options are the SRV-4S plus SRV-6 because “the removal head traverses from side to side as the truck moves forward. So, you’re able to get a eight foot wide cleaning path.”

Some of the key features of the StarJet include NLB’s high pressure pumps which, Aldea said, has a life of between between 1,000 plus 1,500 hours plus a maximum output of up to 40,000 psi. The StarJet has an onboard supply of freshwater plus vacuum recovery. On the SRV-4s plus SRV-6, there are dual wide cleaning heads allowing from between a 10 inch wide plus 27 inch wide cleaning pattern. There’s also onboard debris storage plus waster water, plus the ability to separate water from debris for easy dumping.

A new feature introduced this year is the ability to integrate Wi-Fi with the StarJets, allowing for the wireless monitoring of the StarJet’s programs plus systems.

Training for an airport technician comes in two phases Aldea described.

“During the first round, the customers send their people to NLB plus they go through a full three or four days of training at our facility. We talk about safety. Our safety portion of the training is done in conjunction with WJTA guidelines, then we cover operations plus maintenance. And there’s hands on training out in the shop where they actually get to operate a truck in the yard there plus do a little bit of removal as part of the training program. They’re also out in the shop taking apart things, putting them back together, plus then actually testing the truck after they’ve done that, so they make sure they’ve done it the right way. And then the second round of training, NLB sends a technician out to the customer’s location plus pretty much operations plus maintenance training is done at the customer’s location, plus that’s typically a three day process,” he said.

Starjet Working Order

To help keep the StarJet in working order, Aldea said the primary maintenance an operator needs to worry about is simply greasing the system, replacing nozzles, “nozzle covers” and high pressure seals.

“NLB offers a maintenance kit program. What that entails is a customer purchasing a kit that contains modular components that are inside of an NLB pump. They open up their pump and they swap out the components in the pump for what’s in the kit, they send the used components in the kit back to NLB and we totally go through all of those components and refurbish them. They pay $500 for the kit, but it won’t biaya them anything to have refurbishment of the items in the kit. It’s kind of an insurance policy that allows them to have segar components in the pump and they don’t have to worry about a pump going down on a job,” Aldea said.

And Aldea said the feedback from customers utilizing the StarJet has been useful and NLB incorporates that feedback into future updates for the machine.

“We get feedback from customers that they like the low biaya of operation from our truck. They like the production that our trucks give because one of the things that we do a little bit differently than the other guys out there, is we have a dedicated pump engine that drives only the high pressure pump. And the other guys out there, they will drive everything off of the truck engine and so they’re berbagi that horsepower amongst the other systems. With the NLB, we’ve got a dedicated pump engine that is just for high pressure water that that works to greatly extend the life of the truck engine, and more consistent water pressure flow when demands are being put on the truck like when going up a hill.

NLB Water Jetting System

NLB water jetting systems for runway marking removal plus rubber removal work faster plus more thoroughly than abrasive methods, without pavement damage or environmental concerns. They help control the build-up of rubber plus other residues that reduce airplane traction (keeping runway friction values within the accepted range) plus remove old runway markings at the same time.

A water jet leader for over 40 years, NLB was the first company to apply the power of UHP water jetting to runway cleaning plus maintenance. NLB’s patented rotating water jet technology maximizes the power of ultra-high pressure (UHP) water – up to 40,000 psi, or 2,800 bar – plus sets the standard for runway maintenance productivity.

  • Completely remove coatings, membranes,
    thermal epoxies, plus rubber build-up…
    even from grooved pavement
  • Leave concrete plus asphalt undamaged
  • Create a stronger bond for restriping
  • Eliminate dust & debris, using vacuum recovery
  • Save labor, since fewer operators are needed
  • Won’t expose personnel or the environment
    to abrasive tempat or chemicals
NLB delivers the power of ultra-high pressure
water (up to 40,000 psi, or 2,800 bar) in systems
that meet a wide range of kastemer needs. All
are designed for high productivity along with low
    operating costs.
While others farm out design plus manufacturing,
at NLB we take full responsibility for what we sell.
We have more applications experience, in-house
engineering plus production capacity than anyone
    in the water jet industry.

The pump is the heart of any water jet system, plus NLB pumps have set the standard for over 45
years. Our low-rpm, low-wear design extends component life & reduces typical maintenance. The result?
Unsurpassed performance plus uptime.
These hardworking pumps deliver water pressure up to 40,000 psi (2,800 bar) plus are easily accessible for
maintenance. If you need to run them at a lower pressure, a separate conversion kit is available.
While some water jet systems try to operate on power diverted from the truck engine, the Starjet provides
two dedicated sources of horsepower: one for the truck plus vac system plus the other one for the pump.
The truck engine uses only one third of its duty rating while in removal mode meaning you don’t have to
worry that the truck engine will overload plus cause downtime plus layanan expense. The pump engine runs
at approximately 85% of its duty rating for optimum performance plus engine life. Add in the fact that the
horsepower from the pump engine is going directly to the nozzles. Both engines run cooler with longer life
cycles plus optimum fuel consumption.

INTRODUCING NLB’S STARJET SRV-7.

MORE DEDICATED HORSEPOWER
We’ve always engineered our Starjet units to work
off of two engines – dedicated power for the
truck plus a dedicated engine for the pump. Why?
Because there’s no value in a truck with a life that
runs out long before it’s paid for itself. We’ve
also added more power to the SRV-6, offering a
450 HP engine solely for the water jetting pump
and a 350 HP engine to keep powering the truck
down the road long after the competitions have
failed. That also means more consistent water
pressure flow when going up hills or putting extra
demands on the truck engine.

MORE FLEXIBILITY
NLB’s new indexing front head carriage provides
nearly infinite bucket head locations with sideto-side movement all controlled comfortably
from the cab with easy controls plus sight lines.
This movement makes the removal of stop bars,
arrows plus other challenging painted surfaces
much easier without all of the back-and-forth
movements operators may have experienced in
the past. The carriage also offers higher curb
clearance for entering plus exiting roadways and
other uneven pavement areas. Lastly, the design
dramatically improves front-end balance while in
transportation mode, reducing wear on front-end
chassis suspension systems.

MORE HEAD CONTROL
New with the SRV-6 is a two-head SpinJet
bucket design, each head can be operated
independently plus run at different speeds. Head
positioning options allow for maximizing surface
cleaning daerah coverage to meet project removal
requirements. We didn’t just have the operator
in mind when designing this system. The SRV-6
heads are easier to access for belt changes and
other routine maintenance. The new design allows
for conversions to larger SpinJet bars for specific
applications.

MORE BALANCE
NLB engineers took the challenge of improved
water/debris weight balance head on. By
redesigning the truck’s back-end tank plus axle
configurations to handle the shifts in segar water
reductions plus debris collection the axle load
does not change during operation. The result is
longer operation between water refills plus debris
removal.

The NLB Starjet is a self-contained system with rotating water jets on a robotic arm that is mounted to the front of a truck. The Cotta gearbox is being used as a creep drive to give the trucks a controlled plus precise travel speed. The Starjet System is used to remove pavement markings, as well as runway rubber buildup. The travel speed is very important when utilizing high pressure water (40,000 PSI). If the travel speed is too fast, the required marking will not be 100% removed. If the travel speed is too slow, the base surface could be damaged. The creep drive that NLB uses has a minimum travel speed of 10 ft/minute to a max speed of 350 ft/minute. The system will hold the set speed whether the equipment is full of water or empty of water, going uphill or downhill. This precise travel speed allows NLB’s customers to perform flawlessly over the competition that uses other gearboxes.

StarJet SRV-7

Technology & Design Centered on Performance.
NLB StarJet ultra high-pressure water jetting stripe removal systems have held a position as the most durable, technology performance production leaders in the industry. The SRV-7 builds on that heritage by introducing a new center-component design that offers improved performance, less wear, plus reduced maintenance.

The key to this new design is the concept of balance. The slow-running, robust 325 Series pump, along with a Cummins (L9-430 T4F Stage V) 430 hp diesel engine, is in a centerline position on the chassis, resulting in a more even chassis weight distribution. Add that to the unique water/debris collection design that proportionately distributes segar water plus collected debris, plus you eliminate uneven weight transfer from job start to finish.

The SRV-7 also features NLB’s innovative E-Clutch™ technology that allows for the elimination of the PTO while reducing component wear on the power plant.

Other benefits of this design; reduced chassis wiring, plus fewer high-pressure hoses plus electrical components. A new, lighter-weight side-to-side movement front-end arm adds to the high-performance removal capabilities. Furthermore, the lightweight front-end arm, which facilitates side-to-side movement, contributes to improved maneuverability plus precision during operation. This feature is particularly beneficial in confined spaces where traditional machinery may struggle to operate effectively. Operators can navigate tight corners plus challenging environments with ease, resulting in enhanced performance plus efficiency in various applications.

The use of advanced materials in the construction of the chassis plus components plays a crucial role in this design’s overall performance. Lightweight yet durable materials not only reduce the overall weight of the equipment but also enhance its structural integrity. This optimization leads to fuel efficiency improvements, as lighter machines require less energy to operate, contributing to lower operational costs plus a reduced environmental footprint.

Moreover, the integration of smart technology within the design allows for real-time monitoring of machine performance, enabling predictive maintenance plus reducing the chances of unexpected failures. Operators can receive alerts about potential issues before they lead to significant downtime, making it possible to schedule maintenance effectively.
